RAFIKI / STONE TOWN
Anglican Cathedral, Christ Church
Built on the site of the biggest slave market in Zanzibar to celebrate the end of slavery.
Begun in 1873 on a vision of Edward Steere, third Anglican bishop of Zanzibar, and consecrated in 1903, the cathedral is built mostly of coral stone with an unusual barrel-vaulted concrete roof, mixing perpendicular gothic with Islamic detail. The altar is said to stand where the market’s main whipping post once stood. In the square is the well-known monument to the slaves and a museum on slavery; inside is a cross made from the tree where David Livingstone’s heart was buried.
