Palace Museum

The Sultan’s waterfront residence, renamed the People’s Palace in 1964 and a museum since 1994.

The ground floor covers the formative period of the sultanate from 1828 to 1870, when commercial treaties were signed with the United States, Britain and France. It holds the memorabilia of Princess Salme — better known as Emily Ruete — who fled the sultanate for Europe. The second floor covers the years of affluence from 1870 to 1896 when piped water and electricity arrived under Sultan Barghash, and the third floor preserves the modest living quarters of Sultan Khalifa bin Haroub.
